Our Most Common Questions
How does sterilisation work?
The act of sterilisation works by stopping the egg and sperm meeting. In female sterilisation (tubal occlusion) this is done by cutting ceiling or blocking the fallopian tubes which carry on egg from the ovary to the uterus (womb). In male sterilisation this is done by cutting concealing or tying the vas deferens (the tube that carries sperm from the testicles to the penis). This is called vasectomy.
Sterilisation is a permanent method of contraception suitable for people who are sure they never want children or do not want more children. We are here to support your choice.
How effective is male sterilisation?
It is 99.95% effective, with a failure rate of just 1 in 2,000 procedures.
What is the cost?
The cost of the procedure is £749, which includes an initial face-to-face consultation and semen analysis test which is carried out 16 weeks after the procedure.
If, after the initial consultation you decide not to go ahead with the procedure we will refund your fee, less the initial consultation fee of £75.
Most men will only require a single post-procedure semen test. However, if initial results are inconclusive and additional semen tests are required, this is included in the £749 fee.
We encourage all of our patients to read through the information on this website thoroughly before booking online.
Unfortunately, due to contracting restrictions we are unable to provide this private service to patients of PSM Medical Group.
Is there more than one type of vasectomy procedure?
Yes, there is a conventional vasectomy where the surgeon will use a scalpel to cut the scrotum, often requiring a wound on both sides. The tube from the testicles is then cut and both ends are sealed. Stitches are also required to close the wound on the scrotum.
Though perfectly effective, complications, chronic pain, increased bleeding, bruising and infections are more common with this technique.
Nowadays, the more commonly used method is called no-scapel vasectomy where a special instrument is used to create a tiny single split in the skin through which both tubes are accessed and disconnected.
No-scalpel vasectomy presents less chance of bleeding and sometimes requires no stitches at all. The operation is faster, less painful and less likely to cause complications.
All of our procedures are done using the no-scalpel vasectomy procedure.
